Federal Government Canels Funding for RCEN
10/19/2011
It is with great disappointment that the Local Lodge 412 members employed at RCEN learned last week of the Federal Governments decision to withdraw annual core funding. Our members had already received temporary layoff letters as a result of the governments protracted decision on fundijg and were clearly anticipating recall notices as all indications had been that funding would be forthcoming. These expectations were primarily based on a transnmission from the feds last May that indicated it was in the works. The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) one of Canada's oldest, largest and most respected democratic institutions serving the environmental concerns of all Canadians, was forced to layoff staff and is on the verge of closing its doors and those of all 11 regional offices. For the past near 34 years, the RCEN has functioned as the formailized mechanism through which Canadians contribute to policy, legislation and environmental management in this country. Developments will be reported on this page as they occur. We wish all of our members all of the best in their fight to maintain this essential service that benefits all Canadians.
